A consumer court in Hyderabad has dealt a major blow to Tata Motors in the electric vehicle case. The court ordered the company to refund the full price of the car to the owner of the Nexon EV car. The car’s owner’s name is Jonathan Brainard. He had complained about his car catching fire. The court recognized that the car’s fire was caused by a manufacturing defect. Along with this, the Regional Consumer Dispute Resolution Commission also ordered to compensate Brainard for the mental stress he suffered.

>> This case dates from June 2023. Then Brainard’s Tata Nexon EV car suddenly caught fire. This incident happened in Telangana. Brainard was driving the car at the time. A video of this incident also went viral on social media. Then, Brainard said his car was traveling at a speed of 38 km/h. Then suddenly there was a huge explosion and the car caught fire.

>> He saved her life by immediately getting out of the car. The fire spread so quickly that the car doors were blocked. He could only exit through the driver’s side door. After this incident, Brainard filed a complaint against Tata Motors in the consumer court. He said in his complaint that the car was already experiencing numerous technical problems.

The battery was draining quickly
Brainard said in his complaint that the car’s battery was draining quickly. At the same time, the car stopped driving when it was 18% charged. When he showed the car to the service center, he was initially told that the car’s HV battery was faulty. Then unbeknownst to them, instead of installing a new battery, an old reconditioned battery was installed.

Return order Rs 16.95 lakh
Hearing the matter, the Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered Tata Motors to refund the entire price of the car, Rs 16.95 lakh, to Brainard. Additionally, the court also ordered compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh for mental torture and injuries and Rs 10,000 for legal costs.
