There are many more choices of electric cars in the Indian market today than there were two years ago. Additionally, there are more purchasing options today, further accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. The car is made more attractive to buyers thanks to the new BaaS program launched by MG Motor. Under the new BaaS program, electric cars are available at much lower prices.

To maintain its market share in the electric car segment and offer significantly lower ex-showroom prices, Tata Motors is reportedly working on introducing BaaS models with its electric range. Upon launch, Tata’s BaaS program could be available with the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV and the recently launched Curvv EV.

Tata Nexon EV BaaS

India’s leading electric car maker, Tata Motors, leads the segment with around 65% market share. But there was a significant 14.57% year-on-year decline in sales in August 2024. The company is now reportedly considering launching its own BaaS program to provide electric vehicles at lower prices. However, its launch schedule has not been revealed yet.

JSW MG Motor India was the first company to launch BaaS (Battery as a Service) program in India. Starting with the Windsor EV, JSW MG Motor India redefined electric vehicle pricing and then expanded its BaaS model to include the Comet EV and ZS EV. Customer reception seems to be very positive towards the BaaS concept, as the MG Windsor EV received over 15,000 bookings on the first day itself.

By offering a battery rental service, MG offered significantly lower ex-showroom prices. Mahindra has taken note of this and is offering a BaaS model with its new Jio Commercial 4W van. Notably, Mahindra has not announced a BaaS model on the XUV400, which constitutes its electric offering in the photovoltaic segment.

How will BaaS help you?

As per the report, there is almost 30% reduction in ex-showroom prices with BaaS, so we can expect the Tiago EV price to be around Rs 5.6 lakh (ex-showroom + tariff), the Punch EV from around Rs 7 lakh (ex-showroom + prices), Tigor EV and Nexon EV from Rs 8.75 lakh (ex-showroom + prices). Prices for the Curvv EV will start at Rs 12.25 lakh (ex-showroom + prices). All these prices are approximate.
